Personal profile

Research Interests

Michael is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Global Food Security and also the Secretary for the Northern Ireland Royal Society of Biology. He holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Nevada, and a PhD in Cellular & Molecular Biology, from the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Michael’s PhD studies centred around generating an extensive antibody library against bacterial capsular- and lipo- polysaccharides, and then using that library to develop and validate clinical diagnostic immunoassays for Burkholderia pseudomallei infection.

He then completed a Leverhulme-funded postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Exeter, where he developed an antibody-based field test used to diagnose Batrachochytrium(chytrid) infection in amphibians. In 2017, his team received a Gold Award from the British & Irish Association of Zoos (BIAZA) for research into rapid field tests to help in the fight against global amphibian extinction.

Michael is currently working on BBSRC-funded projects that focus on early detection systems for food biosecurity. He is currently looking at biosensor tools that can monitor both animal and human health, to improve food safety and increase animal welfare.
