I am currently undertaking a PhD Research project on "Embedding spatial data into local authorities using web-based geoportals". The research will be conducted through a case study of Belfast City council. This research will be closely aligned to work being carried out through the Queen's University Belfast and Belfast City Council Area Working Group. This research aims to explore and improve how local authorities and councils use and manipulate geospatial data in terms of decision-making practices by implementing a geospatial geoportal. The research will be conducted through systematic reviews of current web-based geoportals, and local councils use of geospatial data. This project will focus on the development of core insight pieces. These insight pieces will use Belfast City Council data and illustrate how geospatial data can enhance local councils' decision-making frameworks. The systematic reviews and insight pieces will form a base for a geospatial geoportal prototype to act as a data repository for Belfast city council along with online and mapping techniques such as querying, map making, and downloading of data. This geoportal will allow for a better understanding of data-based decision-making frameworks and increase local authorities' services efficiency.
