Personal profile

Particulars

Pamela Walsh is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (SMEA). She joined SMEA in 2020. Prior to this she was an academic staff member in the School of Chemical & Chemical Engineering. She currently holds a Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) Leverhulme Trust Research Fellow 2022-23, is a former Maria Skłodowska-Curie Fellow. She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). She holds a PhD in Engineering from Queen’s University Belfast.

Research Focus

My research interests lie in the development and functionalisation of marine materials, mainly seaweeds and microalgae for pharmaceutical, biotechnological and biomedical applications. This includes development of green algae extracts, valorisation of biomass, extraction and identification of biologically active compounds from marine biomass sources, marine based biomaterials for tissue engineering, biomedical applications of marine extracts and algal animal feeds. I have worked on a number of industrial and research-based projects in this area. My research has been funded by Invest NI, Royal Society, EU H2020 and DAERA/DAFM.

I have been PI on two industrial projects, one focusing on the bioremediation of waste nutrients from Anaerobic Digestion to act as a fertiliser to grow microalgae, the other was focused on seaweed supplemented animal feeds to improve gut health and nutrition in livestock. Both of these projects were funded by Invest NI Competence Centres (CASE and AFQ). I am currently involved in a number of research projects, e.g. Co-PI on SeaFEED (DAERA/DAFM) investigating seaweeds as an alternative to zinc in animal feeds , Co-I on an EU project - SeaSolutions, to help reduce methane emissions in livestock using seaweed extracts.
