Dr. Mapa Prabhath Piyasena is a Public Health Ophthalmologist from Sri Lanka. He graduated his Bachelors in Medicine and Bachelors in Surgery (MB BS - 2nd Class Honours) from University of Peradeniya Sri Lanka in the year 2004. In addition, he earned a Diploma in Nano-Science and Nano-Technology under the Post Graduate Institute of Science Sri Lanka, which helped to develop his skills in conducting fundamental lab-based research. Immediately after graduation, Dr. Piyasena worked as a Research Assistant in South Asian Clinical Toxicology Research Collaboration, partnered with University of Oxford - United Kingdom.

He gained clinical experience in obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics, general practice, clinical toxicology, rabies prevention and emergency medicine under internship and post-internship appointments under the Ministry of Health Sri Lanka. Afterwards, Dr. Piyasena entered into the Postgarduate In-service Training in Clinical Ophthalmology under the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine - University of Colombo in the year 2009, passing through a competive examination. He trained and worked in clinical rotations of general clinical ophthalmology, eye care emergencies, cataract, glaucoma, cornea, child-hood eye diseases and vitreo-retinal surgeries under eminent Trainers at National Eye Hospital Sri Lanka. Dr. Piyasena seleted vitreo-retinal sub-specialty and trained and worked as a Senior House Officer in Vitreo-Retina, when it was not a fully recognized sub-specialty field in the country. Under gudiance of Senior Supervising Consultant, Dr. Piyasena conducted the first situational analysis of vitreo-retinal diseases and utilsed those data to inform higher level decision makers at the Ministry of Health Sri Lanka, to establish Vitreo-Retina as a recognized sub-specialty. Further, he was a key contributor in establishing the first dedicated Vitreo-Retinal Clinic at National Eye Hospital of Sri Lanka and development a health information system for vitreo-retina.

Dr. Piyasena was enthusiastic to develop his leadership skills and entered into the training of Health Care Administrators (Master's in Medical Administration) under the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine - Sri Lanka. However, based on the public health issues and gaps in local evidence that he has identified during clinical practice, Dr. Piyasena decided to and pursuaded a research career pathway in Public Health Ophthalmology and completed a Master's (2014) and a Doctorate (2019) at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine - United Kingdom. He has volunteered for many activities under the VISION2020 country programme and worked as a volunteer ophthalmologist for Hospital of Department of Police, Military Hospital of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka Navy Hospital in Colombo. In addition, Dr. Piyasena worked as a national level Policy Reviewer under the Ministry of Health Sri Lanka and contributed for enactment of impactful health sector policies. Currently he works as a Research Fellow in Global Eye Health and an Appointed Fellow under Evidence Synthesis Ireland (ESI).
