Research Focus

I am undertaking a PhD studentship under the title of:

'Marine Habitat Restoration for Future Resilience: Biogenic Reef Restoration in Sea Loughs Under a Changing Climate'

My aim is to assess the current practises used within marine habitat restoration and attempt to optimise them for use specifically within Northern Ireland's sea loughs. I will be focussing on biogenic habitats such as native oyster (Ostrea edulis) reefs and seagrass (Zostera marina) meadows, exploring options for both passive and active restoration. A further aim of this project is to future-proof these methods to account for the effects of changing pressures such as rising sea temperatures, increasing ocean acidification and the spread of marine non-native invasive species.
