Particulars

Dr Regis Simo is a Lecturer (Research & Education) at the School of Law, specialising in International/World Trade Law. His research focuses on international law, international economic law, law and development, and African Union (economic) Law. In September 2022, he was appointed a UK Trade and Sustainable Development Domestic Advisory Group (UK TSD DAG) Member Representative by the UK Department for International Trade (DIT).  Dr Simo is a South African National Research Foundation C-rated Scholar (as an established researcher) effective 1 January 2023.

Before joining Queen's University Belfast, he was a Senior Researcher at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Before that, he was a Teaching and Research Fellow at Bocconi University, Milan, Italy, and a Marie Curie Fellow at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland.

Dr Simo has held visiting lecturer positions at the European University Institute (EUI), Florence (Italy), the University of Pretoria (South Africa) and a visiting researcher position at the Swiss Institute of Comparative Law.

He holds a PhD in International Law and Economics from Bocconi University, an LLM from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland (specialising in International Trade Law), an MSc. in Comparative Law, Economics and Finance from Turin and an LLB from the University of Buea (Cameroon).

In terms of broader academic engagement, Dr Simo has:

  • reviewed book proposals, including for leading university presses;
  • acted regularly as a peer-reviewer for leading international peer-reviewed journals.

He sits on the Editorial Board of the German Law Journal, the African Journal of International Economic Law and the International Journal of Public Law and Policy. He is also a Contributing Editor of AfrononomicsLaw, a blog focusing on all aspects of international economic law relating to Africa and the Global South.

Outside academia, Dr Simo has worked as a consultant in several donor-funded trade-related technical assistance (TRTA) projects in Africa, advising governments on the negotiation and implementation of trade agreements.
