Research Interests

Roger is a member of the AI Research Theme. His research interests includes:

  • Novel computing systems including multi-precision computing, edge computing solutions, Field Programmable Gate Arrays
  • Big Data analytics particulalrly focused at manufacturing.
  • Innovative telecommunications hardware platforms incorporating edge AI technology for advanced secuirty and IoT applications.

Teaching

Teaching areas include:

  • Digitals systems design including module ELE3038 and relevant final year/MSc projects.
  • ELE3044 Engineering Entrepreneurship module which puts students through their paces in establishing a company to commercialise an engineering product. 

Achievements

  • Co-founder and Chief Scientist of Analytics Engines Ltd., a company providing data analytics solutions which reduces complexity, optimises performance and builds intelligence

  • Leadership role in establishing and running the EFutures academic network engaged in all aspects of electroncis research in technology/design

  • Principal Investigator for the Kelvin-2 Tier-4 High Performance Computing centre involving Queen's University Belfast and Ulster University
  • Member of the EPSRC's Strategic Advisory Team on ICT

  • Designer of a number of innovative microchips with industry for data processing, commercial standards conversion technology.

  • Advisory board member to the IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Committee on the Design and Implementation of Signal Processing Systems

  • Expert on STEM to the Northern Ireland Assembly

  • Chair of the Engineering Policy Group Northern Ireland

  • General chair of the 2018 International International Symposium on Applied Reconfigurable Computing and the 2014 Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers.
