Research Statement

My research is primarily in the area of supernovae and explosive, extra-galactic transients. Although the field is relatively mature, the advent of new technology i.e. larger CCDs (charge-coupled devices) combined with larger-aperture optical and infrared telescopes available from both ground- and space-based facilities, has led to rapid evolution of the field on short timescales.

My research is primarily driven by observations, and I have built up a track-record in successfully obtaining telescope time at highly oversubscribed facilities. This has gone some way to ensuring that when a potentially interesting transient is detected (e.g. by amateur astronomers or professional searches), the supernova group at QUB has the resources (i.e., telescope time) in hand to follow it up.

Links with world-leading theoreticians enables comparisons of our observations with state-of-the-art simulations.

Supernova research at QUB has been well-supported by STFC, both in terms of PDRA support and FEC. Publications are invariably in journals of high international standing, with citation-rates to match. This in turn has attracted applications of fellowships from several high-profile candidates, invitations at conferences, and various facility and funding panels.

Recent announcements of the Nobel prize for Physics (a result based on supernovae), the selection of the EUCLID space mission by the European Space Agency as part of its 2015-2025 Cosmic Vision Plan, and the announcement of £3.5 million of STFC investment for the European-Extremely Large Telescope ensures a bright future for this field. Indeed, the supernova group (RK, S. Smartt) at QUB has contributed to the scientific cases for both of the above (EUCLID, E-ELT).
