Sara Melo is a Senior Lecturer in Management.

Research Interests

Healthcare management; quality and patient safety improvement; innovation management; implementation of new technologies in healthcare and in other sectors, using qualitative research methods.

Research Focus

Sara Melo adopts an organisational studies perspective to better understand the design and implementation of innovations, particularly in the healthcare sector.

Sara’s research has explored how innovations start, evolve, and are successfully implemented, including the role of factors such as: learning networks; place; objects; temporality; knowledge translation; hospital accreditation; performance measurement and management systems; and public sector governance models.

Sara is currently involved in four international research projects exploring:

1 – the role of a hospital’s Business Intelligence system in decision-making

2 – hospital staff ideas for improving patient’s clinical nutrition

3 - health monitoring in smart homes and older adults' perceptions and use of digital technologies

4 - the use of the internet of things in the production of coffee

Sara has published a book with Palgrave Macmillan and has published in leading journals including Social Science & Medicine; International Review of Administrative Sciences; Journal of Health, Organisation and Management; Human Resource Development Quarterly.

Sara’s PhD research won an international award: the 2014 Emerald/EFMD Outstanding Doctoral Research Awards - Highly Commended winner in the category of Healthcare Management.

Experience

Before joining Queen’s in 2012, Sara was a Research Fellow and Project Manager at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, and a Teaching Fellow in Public Sector Management (0.5fte) at the University of York, UK. Prior to embarking on a PhD, she was the chartered accountant of a textile company and worked as the CEO’s assistant at a district hospital in Portugal.
