Research Interests

Dr Savannah Dodd is a visual anthropologist whose areas of specialisation include representational ethics, narrative construction, and photography theory, practice, and materiality, especially as they relate to political and religious conflict. 

Her current research focuses on contemporary archival practices of collecting and managing photographs of Troubles-era Northern Ireland. 

Other

Alongside her work as an academic, Savannah is also the Founder and Director of the Photography Ethics Centre. Since 2017, the Centre has been dedicated to promoting ethical literacy across the visual media industries through education. Through the Centre, Savannah's creates educational resources, facilitates workshops, and consults on a wide range of projects, including on research projects which use visual methods. 

As part of this role, Savannah previously held an ESRC-funded Practitioner Appointment at the Queen's University Belfast Centre for Creative Ethnography during which she conducted research about how professional photographers think about and practice ethics.

Savannah sits on the UK Committee of the Ethical Journalism Network, on the Board of Source Magazine, and on the EDI Committee of Photo Museum Ireland.

Savannah also maintains her own practice as a professional visual artist.

Achievements

In 2024, Savannah received the Educator Award from the International Visual Literacy Association, and the Young Alumna/us Award from the Graduate Institution of Geneva, where she earned her master's degree. She also participated in QUest, a start up accelerator run by QUBIS and SU Enterprise. Through QUest Savannah won £7,500 in funding for the Photography Ethics Centre.

In 2023, she delivered a TEDx talk at Queen's University Belfast entitled "Changing the World with Visual Media Ethics."

In 2021, she was named as one of the 100 most inspirational female entrepreneurs in the UK by Small Business Britain, and she achieved Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

In 2020, Savannah won the AHSS poster competition as a PhD candidate at QUB. She received funding for her work with the Photography Ethics Centre from QUB's Isolation Innovation Award and from the International Women's Media Foundation. She received funding for a photographic research project from the Public Health Agency and from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

In 2019, she was a finalist for the Institute of Directors Northern Ireland Young Director Award. In 2018, she was a finalist for the Institute of Directors Student of the Year Award, the Catalyst Invent Student Award, QUB Dragon's Den, and the Howard Chapnick Award.
