My thesis is entitled 'Sibling relations in Protestant middle-class Ulster families, c.1850-1900'. Using a range of family papers and private correspondence, my research investigates gendered relations, intimacies and inequalities between siblings in eight middle-class Protestant families from Ulster. It explores the insecurities and rivalries existent between brothers and sisters as well as long-lasting emotional and loving bonds. It aims to shed light on sibling influence on family strategy, social mobility, household formation and family identity in both rural and urban Irish middle-class contexts throughout the life cycle.
