Shuyun Zhang is a third year PhD candidate at Queen's University Belfast, UK. Her current PhD research focuses on the debate between vertical urbanisation and heritage in China's new first-tier cities. This researh will benefit the urban planning field by taking one of the most controversial housing forms (high-rise buildings) into the domain of politics and the international salience around narratives of historic heritage, preservation/conservation, assemblage, and social value in times of globalised neoliberalisation. Shuyun has experience of conducting qualitative research in Ireland on debates about high-rise buildings and urban character in major Irish cities. To be precise, her research skills include semi-structured interviews with stakeholders, discourse analysis, and review of primary and secondary data.
