Personal profile


Simon Doherty obtained his BVMS from the University of Glasgow in 2000. With two decades of experience in veterinary practice, research & diagnostics, animal health & aquaculture, and trade & investment, Simon was appointed as the president of the British Veterinary Association (BVA) for 2018/19.

Simon is one of two BVA representatives at the Federation of Veterinarians in Europe (FVE). He chairs the FVE Food Safety & Sustainability Working Group and the World Veterinary Association (WVA) One Health Education Working Group, having been appointed as an ad hoc expert to the WVA One Health Strategic Focus Group in 2020. He is the independent chair of the UK Abattoir Sector Group.

Simon’s interests span sustainable livestock agriculture & aquaculture – including animal welfare, environmental impact & antimicrobial resistance - One Health approaches to global health challenges and novel vaccine design.
