Research Focus

Stella Skiadopoulou is a Film Studies PhD candidate at the School of Arts, English and Languages.

Her PhD research project, titled "Nostalgia, Migration and Affect: Participatory Nostalgia Re-enactments as Empowering Storytelling Methodological Tool", brings together the fields of participatory filmmaking, nostalgia re-enactments in film and affect film theory, explored through a creative practice lens.

 

Achievements

Over the past four years, she has produced, directed, and edited four short films.

Baltic (so it is!) was officially selected for the Ethnographic Film Festivals in Athens (2023) and Paris (2024), as well as Docs Ireland (2024). It was also nominated for a Royal Television Society (RTS) NI Student Award in the Factual Short-Form category. Mantis Shrimp won the RTS NI Student Award in the Entertainment and Comedy category and received the Audience Award at a Queen’s University Belfast screening. Lab Dreams won a student competition organized by the Lyric Theatre.

Her most recent film, Nostos (2024), created in collaboration with artists from migrant and refugee communities in Belfast, received the prestigious Prosser Award for early-career scholars in Visual Sociology from the International Visual Sociology Association (IVSA).
