Personal profile

Particulars

Being a polymath in/outside linguistics, I'm at my core a theoretical linguist interested in various interface phenomena of syntax, with secondary trained expertise in experimental syntax and psycholinguistics- especially the divergences and convergences between syntactic theories and formal theories of (syntactic) processing such as Lyn Frazier's garden-path model. Currently, I'm focusing on complex predicates' argument structure, supervised by Drs Marc Richards (primary supervisor), Joan Rahilly and Chen-En Ho, among others. Before joining Queen's as a PhD candidate in Linguistics, I studied linguistics at Leeds (Sep 2020-Jan 2022, MA with Distinction), and then I studied theory-motivated psycholinguistics at York (1st Feb 2022- Feb/July 2024, MA by Research). My first degree was BA and BA (Hons) in Translation from Jiangxi Normal University (2016-2020) and I received advanced training in sciences during senior high schooling. My name in Chinese is WEI Yu (魏宇), and I'm from a historically important City- Wuhan where China's last imperial dynasty ended and European merchants had long shipped goods to our Yangtze River, etc.

Research Interests

I've specialised in phenomena of (1) (Chinese) theoretical and experimental syntax, (2) semantics/prosody's interface with syntax and (3) formally or theoretically modelled psycholinguistics (all processing units of language) and (4) experimental methodology i.e. designing and building (via various platforms) audio-visual judgment tasks, reading/real-time (comprehension) including maze or self-paced reading, as well as (5) data processing on R or sound software and etc, which I've exposed myself widely to since Leeds (2020).
