In the current digital economy, leaders are no longer leading human teams alone. They are increasingly responsible for human–machine teams, in which people work alongside and in collaboration with AI systems, robots, digital twins, and other forms of automation. These technologies can improve judgement, planning, and service delivery, while also creating new challenges related to trust, bias, over-reliance, accountability, and responsibility. Through this Fellowship, Professor Ganna Pogrebna will explore how leaders in Japan, Singapore, and the United States are learning to lead human–machine teams effectively across both urban and rural contexts. She will examine what works, what fails, and what UK institutions can learn from international practice. The Fellowship will support the development of practical guidance to help leaders build future teams that are effective, ethical, and worthy of trust.
