In 2013, after an open competition I was appointed joint commissioner and curator for the Irish pavilion for the 14th International Biennale of Architecture (directed by Rem Koolhaas), Venice 2014. The Venice biennale is the biggest architectural exhibition in the world. In 2014 the exhibition was visited by over 300,000 visitors. Responding to Koolhaas’ call, we took the opportunity to use the pavilion as means to generate research on the relationships between infrastructure and architecture in the development of modern Ireland – a peer-reviewed book has been published in 2015 and other publications will follow in 2016/17. The project budget was 350,000 Euros and was funded by Culture Ireland, the Arts Council in Ireland, and supported by the Government Policy on Architecture, the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland, and Queen’s University, Belfast. http://infra-eireann.irelandvenice.ie
