‘I will be leaving QUB in August and Dr. Kelly has well and truly been the reason that my time here has been so productive. Without him, I would not have gained an interest in American history. From my second year, he motivated, inspired, and assisted me every step of the way and has continued to do this up until this present day where I am studying for my Masters under his supervision. Outside of his wonderful teaching, Brian has always went above and beyond the call of duty with me. He has met with me at unsociable hours when I needed help, has reviewed and corrected countless papers and essays that I was submitting to conferences or universities, and over the past year has been a constant support beam as I have applied to graduate schools for my PhD. There were many moments over the past year when I did not like the work that I was doing, did not feel that I was good enough to have a conference paper accepted, did not think I was going to do well in an essay, or did not think the stress of applying to graduate school was worth it. But Brian was always there to help me through it whenever I needed him.
Without Brian, I would not be going to graduate school in August. I would not have spoken at conferences, and I would not be doing as well as I am in my degree. He has trained me to become a competent writer, a confident speaker, and, hopefully, half the historian and man that he is. I feel he deserves recognition for his efforts, with not just me, but with the many other students I know he has inspired and helped.’
