Northern Ireland Regional Social Work Award (Learning and Development Team Award)

Prize: Prize (including medals and awards)

Description

I received this Northern Ireland Regional NISCC Social Work Award with a colleague in the category of 'Learning and Development Team Award' based on an innovative and fresh community of learning and practice teaching project which I introduced and led since starting Queen's in 2006. The project involves social work students visiting service user and carer groups in their own community care settings as a way of helping the students make meaningful links between social work values teaching and how this applies to practice. The Regional Social Work Awards are organised annually by the Health and Social Care Trusts, The Health and Social Care Board and the Northern Ireland Social Care Council to recognise and celebrate excellence in social work.
This particular award winning project, we subsequently published in 'Ethics and Social Welfare' to evidence the positive pedagogic impact of this project in terms of its benefits to students and those participating service user and carer groups. Since I commenced this project in 2006, approximately 550 students have benefitted and a large range of service user and carer groups. The project is supported each year by funding from the Northern Ireland Social Care Council.
