Research Affiliate: Papers of Hartford Montgomery Hyde and homosexuality in Northern Ireland
Wallace, Rachel (Recipient)
Prize: Fellowship awarded competitively
Description
The research was funded by the AHRC IPS award. I researched the papers of H. Montgomery Hyde. He was a unionist politician in Belfast who supported the Wolfenden Report which supported the decriminalization of homosexuality in the United Kingdom in the 1950s. He also wrote various history books addressing homosexuality and biographies of suspected gay historical figures. His books and political views contributed to the creation of a gay identity and community in Northern Ireland as they highlighted the recurrence of homosexuality in history despite the contemporary hostility.
