A two-year study by Dr Martin of Queen's University Belfast will look at increasing the amount of airway surface liquid, which is vital for keeping the airways moist and allows people with CF to clear mucus more easily. People with CF often suffer with infection due the build up of mucus.
The research will look for ways of identifying Channel Activating Proteases (CAPs) to help stop too much sodium being reabsorbed and therefore enabling the lungs to clear thick mucus. This could revolutionise CF treatment and prevent lung damage and infection occurring.
