Abstract
This article reviews Rethinking Evidence in the Time of Pandemics:Scientific vs Narrative Rationality and Medical Knowledge Practices,a recent book by Eivind Engebretsen and Mona Baker from the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare Education,University of Oslo.Following Walter Fisher’s narrative paradigm, the book examines how narrative influences medical knowledge in issues of face masks, policymaking, and vaccination. The disussion in the book has both theoretical and practical value, which has promoted the development of narrative medicine theory and the reflection on the scientific response to the COVID-19 epidemic. However, the book takes most examples from English/European culture-based events. The impact of different countries, cultures and languages on the epidemic narrative has not been adequately considered.
