Abstract

2016 Strategic Management Society (SMS), Special Conference, Hong Kong, China | Contextualizing Strategic Management in Asia - Institutions, Innovation and Internationalization. Qualitative Studies of Organizations and Governance | Strategy, Environment, Resources and Institutional Context as Determinants of Firm Performance in Emerging Markets. Presented by Ulf Bosch as invited speaker at SMS Special Conference Hong Kong (#SMSHongKong). Presentation of peer-reviewed proposal blindly selected out of more than 250 submissions. Session and debate chaired by Prof. Dr. Robert E. Hoskisson (Rice University), Track A, Session 345. Location: The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Cheng Yu Tung Building, 12 Chak Cheung Street, Shatin, New Territories, Hong Kong (SAR), China, Hong Kong, China. Academic abstract: This research examines the convergence of strategic choice, institutionalism and firm-institutional interaction in emerging markets. It utilizes typology-driven theorizing based Miles and Snow’s (1978) strategic typology informed by Oliver’s (1991) strategic response to institutional processes supplemented by Child et al.’s (2012) notion of co-evolution. The study advances the notion of institution-oriented strategic choice in international business (IB) strategy and provides a theoretical contribution by disentangling the relationship between generic strategy and institutional strategy. It offers a parsimonious model for the complex concepts of generic strategy and institutional strategy including co-evolution. It helps to close a serious gap of empirical research and provides advice of practical relevance to business managers on how to develop proper strategic configurations to thrive in China’s institutional environment. Based on a bilingual self-report questionnaire, the field research in China has generated 212 quantitative cases.
