A field in crisis?

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter is one of two introductory chapters for the book. It takes stock of where the field, or discipline, of European Studies is in 2022, and how European Studies have waxed and waned since the 1980s. Building on two recent surveys of academics teaching Europe, it sketches a tentative roadmap to increase the resilience of our teaching: first, the need to decentre Europe in our teaching of European integration and diversify the voices and approaches we use to do so; second, at a time where compulsory, disciplinary specific modules on the EU are at risk, a call to reclaim interdisciplinarity in our teaching; and third, to build on the unique strengths of our object of study to harness innovative forms of teaching and assessments and bolster employability through transferable skills.
