A matter of choices: the benefits of multi-ecosystem field courses for undergraduate students

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperpeer-review

Abstract

Life is a matter of choices. Undergraduate students grappling with uncertainty about their future careers face a common challenge. While some decide on their career goals early in life, never wavering from their original choice, for others, career paths can often evolve. Remaining open- minded is therefore key to unlocking passions and finding fulfilment. Undergraduate students on our general Biological Sciences degree pathway undertake an intensive residential field course where they are exposed to field-based exercises, in marine, terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems, through which we aim to equip them with the knowledge and experience to make informed choices about specialising in degree pathway options and ultimately their careers. Field courses in higher education have the potential to be transformative experiences for students. These immersive learning opportunities take students out of traditional classroom settings and into the real world, where they can apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations. Field courses involve direct interaction with the natural environment, engaging students in hands-on research, data collection, and problem-solving. This experiential learning fosters a deeper understanding of concepts, encourages critical thinking, and cultivates a sense of curiosity and wonder. Field courses also promote teamwork, communication, and adaptability, as students collaborate with peers and navigate unpredictable situations. Ultimately, these transformative experiences can shape students' perspectives, ignite passions, and inspire lifelong dedication to their chosen fields. This presentation will showcase the range of exercises and variety of experiences we provide to Level 1 students in the field.
