Abstract
The current question in the RSE community is what is causing the remarkable drop in software REF returns, considering the explosion of the RSE movement in the UK? One potential contributing factor is a lack of guidance for researchers regarding the publication of their code, which would lead to low return rates for such digital artefacts. This survey seeks to examine the extent to which this guidance exists and whether the community feels it would aid the cause for software publication. In parallel, we are researching the research output repositories of UK academic institutions to examine whether software can be deposited as a recognised type of research output.
