Abstract
This chapter provides a contextual overview of the nature, culture and theory of orthopaedic and musculoskeletal trauma nursing. The aim is to engender curiosity and enthusiasm for a specialty that is diverse and in which the practitioner provides complex specialist care that impacts upon the lives of individuals across the life span. Orthopaedic and trauma nursing is placed in its historical and developmental context to provide an insight into the nature of 'professional judgment' which is valued alongside evidence-based approaches to practice. The chapter provides a summary of the underpinning principles and theoretical base which the practitioner can apply to the knowledge and guidance provided in the remainder of the book.
