Abstract

This chapter presents a detailed case scenario of a seven-year-old girl who was admitted to the children's surgical ward with a history of vomiting and abdominal pain in question and answer type format. Taking a child, young person and family-centred approach, it offers a comprehensive and accessible discussion of care planning with continuous reference to core principles and nursing values. Following an in-depth nursing assessment and medical examination she is diagnosed as having appendicitis and has been prepared for theatre to have an appendicectomy. Two aspects of care postoperatively are addressed; these are wound care and communication. When undertaking wound care, it is important to consider wound assessment, cleansing solutions, and type of dressing. Good communication is essential when working with children, young people, and their families since it assists in building up trust and encourages them to feel comfortable in seeking advice.
