Abstract
The largest computational cost associated with any gradient based optimization is the calculation of gradients themselves. The link between global and local optimization process for an overall aircraft structural design is the reserve factor (RF) sensitivity chain. This paper discusses a novel approach to compute the implicit part of the chain economically. This approach exploits of the concepts of characteristic loads and performance envelopes, which are briefly introduced. To demonstrate the approach the sensitivities of RF to changes in design variables are presented for a simple compound bar assembly and a structural element representing a wing top cover panel.
