Abstract
Constance Georgine Markievicz, often referred to as Countess Markievicz, was, in 1918, the first woman elected to the House of Commons. A feminist, socialist revolutionary and suffrage campaigner, she was also a leader of the Irish independence movement, politically, culturally and militarily, and a member of the first Irish Executive, as Minister for Labour, set up in Dublin during the War of Independence (1919–22). She was the second woman to hold a cabinet-level position in Europe.
