Data-limited stock assessment for artisan fisheries in developing countries: choosing for fisher participation.

Research output: Contribution to conferencePosterpeer-review

Abstract

Stock assessment is essential for sustainable fisheries management and has developed into a sophisticated, but data-hungry and expensive procedure in highly developed fisheries. Data-limited methods (DLMs) have proliferated over the past twenty years, but most are oriented towards developed, mechanised fisheries. We reviewed all available DLMs, rating them for suitability, particularly in developing, mainly artisan fisheries. An important criterion is that they generate acceptable precision in estimates of F_MSY and B_MSY, based on the amount and kind of data that can be gleaned on a very small budget with limited resources. That is best done with fishers’ participation, hence a degree of participatory management. Length frequency distribution data is the most likely source for DLMs in this context and recommendations are made for its collection by supervised fisher participation.
