Delirium Podcast: Interdisciplinary Student Perspectives on Recognition, Assessment and Management of Delirium
Part Of An All-Ireland Research Project On Delirium

This podcast forms a digital research output associated with the DelHPIre (Delirium Health Professionals Ireland) project: Improving prevention, recognition and management of delirium across the island of Ireland through the co-design of an interdisciplinary digital resource for undergraduate healthcare students. The episode features an interdisciplinary panel of undergraduate students from nursing, medicine, and pharmacy at Queen’s University Belfast, discussing delirium from their respective professional perspectives.

The podcast addresses key dimensions of delirium education, including collaborative assessment across professions, recognition of hyperactive and hypoactive delirium, medication-related contributors, use of validated screening tools (e.g., 4AT), patient and family experiences, non-pharmacological and pharmacological management strategies, and prevention approaches. The discussion is grounded in authentic clinical placement experiences and incorporates patient narratives to highlight the emotional and psychological impact of delirium on patients and carers.

The podcast was designed and produced as part of a co-designed, interdisciplinary digital learning resource to enhance undergraduate healthcare education. It exemplifies knowledge exchange through student voice and peer-led discussion, supporting active learning and interprofessional understanding. The output contributes to evidence-based education on delirium and supports the DelHPIre project’s aim of improving recognition and management of delirium across healthcare disciplines.

This digital output supports SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 (Quality Education) by strengthening interdisciplinary education, promoting early recognition of delirium, and improving patient safety and care quality through enhanced professional learning.
