Bibliographical note

This piece is a peer-reviewed piece of work which developed out of a conference paper given in Finland in September 2009. The conference looked at Corporate Social Responsibility and this contribution considered that the CSR model could only really be understood through neo-liberal theories. By looking at the idea of CSR through the lens of Marxist inspired theories, the scope and future of the concept became less certain. The conference paper on which this article was based received the runner-up award for the Best Paper at this conference.

This piece is approximately 6,500 words in length.
