Abstract
The manuscript examines the social history of modern China through the lens of crime, and in particular female criminality as well as crimes against women. This aspect is a novelty, and it is based on primary sources never used before. It contains evidence from police files, tribunal sentences and prisons records.
The content of the manuscript is around 5 main points:1) the history of Shanghai where the researched is based; 2) how social sciences and law sources help to establish the context of the research, and also contribute to the method for a critical examination; 3) women's history in China to understand the subjects of this research; 4) fact finding and analysis of crimes to understand the social phenomenon, the relation between women and crime; 5) examination of the chronology and institutions related to the public order, such as police, tribunal and prisons; and it contains an appendix with data and charts on criminality, glossary of Chinese terms.
