Abstract
This documentary output examines the life and work of Irish Sean Nos singer Dessie O’Halloran. It pursues a research thematic concerned with relations between orality, folklore and filmic narrative. In particular, it explores the linkages between traditional musical/singing/storytelling forms and techniques, and strategies of found footage (film, photograph and audio) filmmaking.
Its methodology employs narrative techniques of film archive usage (previously seen in Asif Kapadia’s Senna (2010), Amy (2015) and Maradonna (2019), to juxtapose film footage, audio archive and photography archives of personal connections to the subject (friends, family , peers), to reconfigure the life experiences, over decades, of O’Halloran, as seen by those who knew him. The film explores the narrative impact of personal connections and personal archive. Adding to this, the film is presented and narrated by John O’Halloran, a cousin of Dessie O’Halloran, and also a musician thus further exploring the narrative possibilities of a close connection accounts, in this case a relative and a fellow musician, thus exploring the impact of this on the narrative storytelling.
