N2 - The following collection of articles reflects the diversity of research, policy and practice in mental health social work in a range of international contexts. We will set the scene for this Special Issue by reflecting upon the origins of the profession and the various challenges and opportunities that affect contemporary mental health social work practice across the world. The editorial will conclude with an appeal for the profession to embrace new approaches, some of which are reflected in the collection, to enable mental health social workers to engage in more empowering ways with individuals, families and communities.
