Abstract

Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the Venezuelan capital experienced a multiplicity of events that not only changed the urban form and structure of the city but its comprehension as a whole entity. The incorporation of urban patterns taken from the Modern movement generated a city that ignored the diversity of their contextual conditions. The lack of public policies to secure the land, the uncontrolled growth and expansion of the outskirts, and the incorporation of vast infrastructural and housing projects – as a consequence of the abundant resources obtained from oil exploitation – generated a mosaic of fragmented territorial units that contributed to envision Caracas as an urban dichotomy. The conundrum therefore concerns on how to reconcile all these units. The focus of this work is based on the observation of the in-between spaces of the capital city, and how different performative representations developed in those spaces serve as catalyst for collective identity, opening the debate about actions that influence the configuration of the territory as strategies for the establishment of a new way of articulating the city.
