Abstract

This chapter focuses on the emergence and evolvement of the clinical nurse specialist role. It commences by setting the context of how this role emerged as one of the advanced practice nurse roles outlined in Chapter 1. The components of the clinical nurse specialist role will be provided, highlighting geographical variations. There will be a discussion of recommendations with regards to educational requirements. Outcomes associated with this role will be outlined. Content will be highlighted related to the components of the role in cancer nursing, which provides the foundation for subsequent chapters.
