Environmental quality in sustainable building design: selective versus exclusive

Two very different approaches aiming at achieving sustainable design are the selective and exclusive model. The selective model refers to a building that is predominately controlled by the occupants; utilising climatic conditions to provide comfortable interiors. The exclusive model accepts technological devices as the primary agent of control through automatic systems; isolating the interior from the exterior and creating a fundamental dislocation from the natural environment. This paper discusses the development of these two conflicting sustainable design strategies, with particular reference to interior environmental quality.
