Abstract
The superelastic scattering of electrons from a positive ion has been experimentally observed for the first time, A cross section of 12, 0 x 10-17 cm2 was determined for the coliisional quenching of the 1s22s2p24P state of C+ at an energy of 3.5 eV. The principle of detailed balancing is used to compare with an jR-matrix calculation for the excitation collision strength to this state.
