Framing Baker: A partial portrait

This chapter serves as the introduction to an edited collection written in honour of Mona Baker, who has for decades been a leading figure in the field of translation and intercultural studies. It provides an overview of Baker’s scholarly activities, with particular attention paid to her work as an editor, mentor, and organizer of academic events. The chapter ends with an overview of this collection and introduces the numerous topics and approaches that are covered by its contributors, including the history of the discipline and its conceptual apparatus, new applications of corpus-based translation studies, socio-narrative theory, and activism in translation. The discussion of Baker’s work is thus also an account of major developments in the study of translation, and of the formation of a global academic community.
