Abstract

A brief review of reconfigurable frequency selective surfaces is presented in this paper, with emphasis on practical biasing techniques. Several important properties of the design techniques are summarized. Two case studies are given for single layer active frequency selective surface using a slot type unit cell, as well as integration of a feed antenna to realize a frequency-tunable pattern reconfigurable antenna. The measured performance of the resulting antenna is presented to verify the design concept. Exploiting active frequency selective surfaces opens up new methods to design reconfigurable antennas.
