Abstract

1. 1. Four morphotypes of silversides (Atherinidae) of Mangueira Lagoon (RS-Brazil) could be identified as Odonthestes bonariensis, Odonthestes humensis and Yaci retropinis. In O. bonariensis the occurrence of two morphotypes, one "little" and the other "normal" in size, was observed. All these morphotypes were examined by isozymes electrophoresis. 2. 2. The genetic identity of these species when compared with each other is: 0.58 for Y. retropinis and O. humensis; 0.59 for Y. retropinis and O. bonariensis (little); 0.59 for Y. retropinis and O. bonariensis (normal); 0.74 for O. bonariensis (little) and O. humensis; 0.79 for O. bonariensis (normal) and O. humensis and 0.80 for O. bonariensis (little) and O. bonariensis (normal). 3. 3. The loci Aat-1 and Ldh-2 are diagnostic for the four morphotypes. 4. 4. The genetic results and the presence of diagnostic loci between these morphotypes indicate that they are separate species.
