Going Coronaviral. Trump, Twitter and the (De)securitization of COVID-19

Research output: Contribution to conferencePoster

Abstract

COVID-19 occupies a unique space a security object - unprecedented in the recent era, massively often imperceptibly distributed in space, and acting as a lightning rod for online discourse. Former US President Donald Trump is likewise unique as a securitising agent - breaking with US security orthodoxies, stylistically and rhetorically distinctive, and exceptionally online.
This piece seeks to unearth the securitisation dynamics between Trump and one fervent online audience-public, the subreddit r/The_Donald. In doing so, it contributes to an understanding of far-right security perspectives on COVID-19, and helps nuance our understanding of securitisation theory in the online age.
