Abstract

Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a burgeoning form of animal-assisted therapy. Although the physically therapeutic benefits of horse-riding are well-documented, EAP is more concerned with psychosocial and emotional growth and development. A growing body of research indicates EAP as an effective intervention for many service user groups, including children. Already used widely in North America and Europe, EAP has recently been receiving attention in Northern Ireland. This short article discusses the potential for EAP as an exciting, holistic and cutting-edge approach to improving outcomes for Looked After Children in Northern Ireland.
