In Tone

Simon Mawhinney (Composer)

Research output: Non-textual formComposition

This is a 10-minute work for solo cello. It was written in collaboration with two distinguished cellists, Chrichan Larson (Sweden) and David McCann (UK). The work makes some notable contributions to the repertoire of solo cello repertoire, fusing together several technical innovations in a novel manner. This includes microtonal retuning (scordatura) of the C string and using post-spectral technique to effectively alter the overall timbre of the cello. Towards the end of the piece, an attempt is made to use string multiphonics. This is a very recent innovation in playing technique and my cellist colleagues are unaware of any pieces that utilise this method. The work also includes a lengthy coda written in natural harmonics. The sophistication of this form of writing required considerable composer-performer interaction in order to develop an appropriate system of notation.
