Abstract

This article introduces analytical theory of agency (ATA) to advance theoretical foundations of the concept of action in organizational research. To this end, it focuses on routines research, which are central in the management field. It elaborates the ideas of the spectrum of intentionality and kinds of action, which not only improve the precision of action-theoretical concepts and their explanatory benefits, but also have the potential to stabilize the divergence between the practice and cognitive perspectives, the most popular approaches to action in business-related research. The article uses selected examples from routines research to show the developmental potential of ATA.
