Abstract
This paper presents new methods and a computer based system, for the integrated tool life prediction and management (TLPM) within an intelligent tool selection system. The theoretical prediction of tool life for turning and boring operations is followed by the modification of those values, in real time, by applying regression techniques on available tool life data. TLPM is a closed loop and data driven system since its operation is largely based on the collection and processing of tool life data from machining processes. The accuracy of predictions is periodically assessed against achieved values with a view to identify the stabilization of tool life constants. Having established control over tool life, allows the specification of optimal tool changing strategies and the efficient planning of tooling requirements. An extensive series of cutting tests was performed to validate the operation of the system with very encouraging results.
