Abstract
In this article, we introduce a key concept from postmodern theory - that of the simulacrum - and explore its relevance for healthcare professions education (HPE). Specifically, we apply this lens to the contemporary trend for simulation in pedagogic and assessment practice. In distinguishing postmodernity from other conceptual frameworks available to educational researchers, we use it to both sound a cautionary note regarding the progression of simulation-based education, and to suggest future directions.
