Abstract
In March 2021, a new domestic abuse offence, which effectively criminalised coercive control, was enacted in Northern Ireland under section 1 of the Domestic Abuse and Civil Proceedings Act (Northern Ireland) 2021 and came into force on 21 February 2022. This chapter examines the historical background as regards domestic abuse in Northern Ireland, and discusses the importance of the criminalisation of coercive control in this jurisdiction. The structure of the book is then explained, and an outline of the forthcoming chapters is provided.
